Working to Protect Your Georgia Driver's License
Many people do not realize that being arrested for DUI causes you to have to deal with more than just the criminal case. That is, separate from the criminal process to determine the guilt or innocence of driving under the influence, there will be another process set into motion on the day following your arrest for DUI. On that day, the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) will begin to take action to determine the status of your driver's license - prior to any conviction for the DUI.
At the time of the arrest, you will be given a yellow permit and the police officer will confiscate your license. From that time, you will be given ten days in which you will be eligible to request a hearing with the State's Department of Driver Services. If the proper steps are taken, a "stay" may be put into place which will temporarily delay your license from becoming fully suspended.
